SSU detains russian agent who collected intelligence on Armed Forces of Ukraine using hidden video recorder (video)
The SSU Counterintelligence prevented the russian military intelligence from obtaining secret information on the positions of the Defence Forces of Ukraine on the southern axis.
As a result of a special operation in Mykolaiv, the SSU detained an agent of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (aka the GRU). The spy collected intelligence on the deployment and movement of Ukrainian troops in the front-line areas, primarily the military equipment provided to Ukraine by Western partners.
According to the investigation, the traitor is a Mykolaiv resident, who repeatedly and openly expressed his pro-kremlin views. In this way, he came to the attention of russian special services that recruited him for sabotage and intelligence gathering after the full-scale invasion started.
To collect coordinates, the agent went to various districts and settlements of Mykolayiv oblast and visually inspected the area. He used a video recorder hidden in his own car to film military facilities and transmitted the collected intelligence to enemy using messenger apps.
The occupiers planned to use the obtained data to launch missile and artillery strikes on Ukrainian troops.
However, the SSU promptly exposed, located and detained the russian agent.
During the searches, investigators seized from the suspect:
- mobile phones,
- computer equipment,
- the video recorder and memory cards with evidence of criminal activity.
The detainee has been notified of suspicion of treason under martial law. Court has ruled to keep him in custody.
The special operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Mykolaiv region with the coordination of the SSU Counterintelligence Department under the procedural supervision of Mykolaiv Region Prosecutor’s Office.
