SSU detains enemy agent spying on Ukrainian ships near Odesa port

The SSU Counterintelligence foiled russia’s plans to obtain information on Ukraine’s Defence Forces in the Black Sea.

As a result of a special operation in Zaporizhzhia, the SSU detained a GRU agent who was reconnoitering locations and movements of Ukrainian warships.

His special focus was on bases and routes of Ukrainian armoured artillery gunboats to the open sea.

To gather intelligence, the spy acted under the cover of a truck driver transporting goods between regions of Ukraine.

Driving the truck, he entered the territory of ports to receive the commercial cargo and tried to covertly record the geolocation of the AFU vessels.

The occupiers hoped to obtain intelligence from the asset to plan their strikes.

The SSU timely uncovered the enemy agent and documented his criminal activities.

Due to the SSU’s efforts, actions were taken to protect Ukrainian personnel and equipment.

The suspect was detained ‘red-handed’ when he was watching AFU ships near Odesa Seaport and trying to report to his handlers.

The investigation also revealed he had another assignment - to spy on the AFU ground units on the Black Sea coast.

SSU investigators have served the detainee a notice of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).

The perpetrator is in custody and faces life imprisonment.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Zaporizhzhia Office under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
