SSU detains russian informant who ‘hunted’ for Ukrainian artillery positions near Avdiivka

The SSU has detained another enemy informant who collected intelligence on deployment and movement of Ukraine’s Defence Forces near the frontline in Donetsk oblast.

The traitor was in direct contact with an officer of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (better known as ‘the GRU’).

In early August this year, the spy received a priority assignment from his russian handler - to identify combat positions of Ukrainian rocket and cannon artillery in Avdiivka sector.

Apart from spying on artillery, the informant covertly recorded the number and types of Ukrainian heavy armoured vehicles moving to the front line of the eastern front.

He also provided information to the GRU on presence of defensive fortifications near local railway stations and bridges.

The invaders wanted to obtain such intelligence in order to plan combat operations, including attempts to fire at Ukrainian artillery positions.

The SSU detained the offender red-handed when he was conducting reconnaissance near an infrastructure facility.

According to the investigation, the enemy informant is a resident of Pokrovsk, recruited by the russian military intelligence remotely.

The man came to the aggressor’s attention because of his regular anti-Ukrainian posts on the banned social network Odnoklassniki.

He kept in touch with the occupiers through his account, from which he registered in russian Internet communities.

In the ‘reports’ to the GRU, their asset described in detail the targets he surveilled and provided their georeferenced location.

Based on the evidence, SSU investigators served the detained individual a notice of suspicion under Article 111-1.7 of the CCU (providing assistance to the armed forces of the aggressor state in conducting warfare against the AFU).

The suspect is in custody, facing 15 years in prison. The investigation is ongoing.

The SSU Office in Donetsk and Luhansk regions carried out the operation under the procedural supervision of Donetsk Region Prosecutor’s Office.
