SSU detains enemy agents spying in Sumy region’s border areas
As a result of counter-sabotage efforts in Sumy oblast, the SSU detained another group of enemy informants. They were reconnoitering positions of Ukraine’s Defence Forces near the border in order to adjust the aggressor’s artillery and air strikes on them.
The primary targets were the AFU’s bases equipped with radar systems.
Using the coordinates, the occupiers planned to fire at the targets from Grad multiple rocket launchers or attack with kamikaze drones.
According to the investigation, the head of the group was a local woman recruited by the russian intelligence after 24 February 2022.
The ruscists recruited her during her illegal movements through non-operational checkpoints on the border with russia. The asset was briefed and instructed to carry out reconnaissance and sabotage against Ukrainian Defence Forces.
Later, the agent involved two accomplices: her mother and an acquaintance living in the border area.
To collect intelligence, they each drove in the region alone and covertly recorded Ukrainian defenders’ locations.
The spies passed the collected data to the group’s head, who then ‘reported’ to her handler from the russian special service.
Anonymous chats in messenger apps were used for communication.
The SSU identified all three members of the network and detained them at their homes.
During the searches, mobile phones and SIM cards with evidence of the crime were seized.
The detained individuals were served notices of suspicion under Article 28.2, 111.2 of the CCU (high treason committed under martial law by a group of persons upon prior conspiracy).
The suspects are in custody, facing life imprisonment.
The SSU Office in Sumy region carried out the operation under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
