SSU detains russian agent in Cherkasy when he adjusted enemy’s strike on city

In Cherkasy oblast, the SSU Counterintelligence exposed an agent of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (aka ‘the GRU’), who collected intelligence on locations and movement of Ukrainian military servicemen and on Ukraine’s air defence systems.

The enemy’s informant is from the temporarily occupied part of Kherson region, who at the beginning of the full-scale invasion supported the invaders and proposed his assistance in the war against Ukraine.

Later, he was contacted via a messenger app by a GRU officer with an ‘offer’ of covert cooperation.

On the aggressor’s instructions, the agent arrived in Cherkasy oblast as an IDP to conduct reconnaissance and sabotage.

The traitor collected information on locations of the Defence Forces and critical infrastructure facilities: air defence systems, military hospitals, factories, bridges and dams.

The russian spy provided electronic geolocations with supporting photos to the occupiers.

The enemy needed the data for adjusting their air strikes on the region.

The SSU Counterintelligence detained the suspect in Cherkasy when he was taking photos of a critical infrastructure facility and passing the ‘report’ to the GRU.

During the detention, the SSU seized the mobile phone used by the agent for gathering and passing intelligence.

Based on the evidence collected, SSU investigators served him a notice of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU - high treason committed under martial law.

The court has chosen custody without bail as a measure of restraint for the suspect. The investigation is underway.

The offender is facing life imprisonment.

The SSU Office in Cherkasy region carried out the operation under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
