Dnipro: SSU detains GRU agent who used volunteer organization as cover

In Dnipro, the SSU Counterintelligence has exposed another member of an agent network of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (‘the GRU’).

After his accomplices were apprehended in January 2023, the man laid low, but recently switched to a backup channel of communication with the russian intelligence service and continued to carry out enemy assignments.

This is the eighth member of the Dnipro-based GRU network exposed by the SSU.

To disguise his reconnaissance and sabotage activities, he used his status as a co-founder of a local NGO engaged in volunteering.

Using this cover, the agent tried to identify locations of the Defence Forces staffs in the region.

The spy also passed information to the aggressor on approximate number and types of military equipment transported by railway to the frontline.

To gather intelligence, he observed the movement of the AFU’s echelons from the NGO’s office located near a railway junction.

The traitor also used his acquaintances, enquiring about Ukrainian defenders under false pretenses and hoping they would unwittingly provide some information.

The enemy asset also collected information on consequences of russian missiles hitting targets in Dnipro, and provided the GRU with data on the affected sites and extent of destruction.

The occupiers used the intelligence to prepare new and adjust repeated air attacks on Dnipro.

During the searches at the suspect’s home, the SSU found a mobile phone with evidence of his communication with the russian GRU.

The SSU has notified the detainee of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason committed under martial law).

At the SSU’s request, the court chose custody as a measure of restraint for the suspect, who is facing life imprisonment. The investigation is ongoing.

The SSU Office in Dnipropetrovsk region carried out the operation under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
