SSU detains FSB agent who wanted to join Army of Drones school in Kyiv to spy on Ukrainian military

As a result of a multi-stage special operation in Kyiv, the SSU detained another agent of russia’s FSB. He was collecting intelligence on special units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the SSU specialising in using unmanned aerial vehicles.

The enemy asset received such an assignment from his russian handler in late August. To carry it out, the spy tried to join one of Kyiv schools of the Army of Drones.

Once enrolled, he was supposed to identify locations of the Defence Forces training grounds where trainees are taught to fly attack and reconnaissance drones.

He also planned to identify bases of Ukrainian special purpose units and their UAVs.

The occupiers were preparing to use the intelligence from the agent to carry out targeted air strikes on the AFU and SSU facilities.

Apart from that, the enemy asset walked the streets of Kyiv as an ‘ordinary resident’ and recorded locations of Ukrainian defenders.

If the agent successfully completed his ‘missions’, the aggressor’s intelligence service promised him monetary rewards, which were to be transferred to his bank card.

The SSU identified the spy timely and detained him ‘red-handed’ when he was photographing a military unit in the capital.

According to the investigation, the suspect is a 49-year-old entrepreneur from Kyiv, recruited remotely by the FSB two months ago. He came to the enemy’s attention through his anti-Ukrainian posts on a russian Telegram channel.

Further communication was carried out through an anonymous chat in the messenger app.

During the searches at the suspect’s home, the SSU found bank cards and computer equipment used in reconnaissance and sabotage activities against Ukraine.

SSU investigators have served the detained perpetrator a notice of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason committed under martial law).

The court has chosen custody as a measure of restraint. The investigation is ongoing. The suspect is facing life imprisonment.

The operation was conducted by the SSU Office in Kyiv and Kyiv region under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
