SSU detains FSB agent who spied on Ukrainian ships defending maritime waters in Odesa
The SSU Military Counterintelligence has foiled another attempt of russia to obtain intelligence on Ukraine’s Defense Forces in the Black Sea.
As a result of the operation, the Security Service of Ukraine apprehended an agent of russia’s federal security service who was reconnoitering bases and routes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces ships near Odesa’s seaport.
The enemy planned to use these data to prepare combat operations in the maritime zone using cruise missiles and kamikaze drones.
In order to direct enemy weapons evading Ukrainian air defenses, the agent received an additional task: to identify firing positions of Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile systems and mobile air defense groups.
To gather intelligence, the traitor drove along Odesa coast in his car and covertly photographed and recorded geolocations of military installations on his phone.
He sent the collected information via a messenger app to his russian handler. The latter’s identity has been established by the SSU.
The SSU documented the perpetrator’s crimes and detained him at his home in Odesa.
Simultaneously, action was taken to protect the positions of the Defense Forces in the southern region.
During the searches in the suspect’s apartment, the SSU found a mobile phone and a computer that the spy used to communicate with the FSB.
According to the investigation, the enemy accomplice is a 37-year-old unemployed Odesa resident whom russian service recruited when he was looking for quick money on Telegram.
SSU investigators have now served the detainee a notice of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).
The suspect is in custody without bail and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The operation was carried out under the procedural supervision of Odesa Region Prosecutor’s Office.
