In 2020, SBU CI suppressed 4 agent networks and detained 11 Russian agents
During 2020, the SBU CI suppressed 4 agent networks and detained 11 agents of the Russian special services, three of whom were involved in attempted subversive and terrorist attacks on critical infrastructure.
An agent of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) who was tasked to explode an ammonia storage facility in the premises of the PrJSC “Severodonetsk Azot Association” was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Two citizens face 12 years in prison for involvement in a terrorist attack in Donetsk region by order of the so-called Special Operations Center of the DNR State Security Committee.
Another FSB agent was detained in Luhansk region. He tried to provide foreigners with secret documents on the Neptune missile system developed by the Ukrainian defense industry.
Moreover, agents of the Russian special services were detected in public authorities and among law enforcement officers, including a former SBU major general, a ministry official, and so on.
In Kherson and Volyn regions, the SBU CI exposed intelligence networks. The first was headed by an official of the regional state administration, other agents collected information about military facilities in the region.
In total, in 2020, due to CI findings, 288 criminal proceedings were initiated for crimes against national and public security.
In particular, 76 criminal proceedings were instituted against treason, 50 against terrorist and subversive activities, 9 against encroachments on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine, 4 against espionage.
In addition to that, 92 court sentences entered into force, including 30 for high treason and 20 for terrorist activity.
The SBU documented violations of international law, 5 foreign diplomats were expelled from the country.
Furthermore, the SBU CI took an active part in protection of state secrets: 111 security clearances were revoked, 125 people were brought to administrative responsibility. Also, 289 cases of foreign citizenship among government officials, including those with access to state secrets, were revealed.
