SBU initiates 52 criminal proceedings for treason in 2020
Since the beginning of 2020 the SBU has initiated 52 criminal proceedings for treason. Another 27 - for the creation of a terrorist group or organization, and 2 each for sabotage, espionage and terrorist attacks.
Most investigations are connected with the exposed Russian intelligence agents who carried out reconnaissance and sabotage against Ukraine.
For example, in April Valery Shaitanov, a former head of CSO “A”, was detained for treason and terrorist attack. He was in contact with the FSB colonel and provided intelligence, including about the operations in ATO/JFO area.
The leader of the intelligence network of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces also received a notice of suspicion. The former Ukrainian serviceman was recruited while serving in the occupied Luhansk region. He and three other individuals gathered intelligence about military facilities in Volyn region.
In addition, the SBU prevented the leaking of secret technical documents on Ukrainian military developments in the missile industry. A resident of Luhansk region, who turned out to be a Russian agent, was detained on trying to pass data to the FSB.
In total, the SBU has initiated 221 criminal proceedings since the beginning of 2020.
During this period, based on the results of investigations, 73 people were sentenced, including 21 for treason.
In particular, a former law enforcement officer Oleh Smorodinov was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Following the FSB tasks, he killed the head of the Rivne detention facility Ivan Mamchur.
Two Ukrainian citizens were sentenced to 12 years in prison for the terrorist attack in Mariupol city. The SBU Colonel Oleksandr Kharaberyush was killed in the attack. They received the task from the representatives of the so-called CSO MDB DNR, controlled by the Russian special services.
The FSB agent, who in July 2020 planned to blow up tanks with ammonia on the territory of PJSC Severodonetsk Association "Azot", was sentenced to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.
A professor of the Xi'an Research Institute of Modern Chemistry was sentenced to 10 years in prison for espionage. He gathered secret information on the development of objects of the defense industry of Ukraine.
