SSU seizes nearly 500 explosive devices in Eastern Ukraine in 2021

The SSU is working systematically to prevent and counter subversive activity of the Russian special services against the national security of Ukraine. In 2021, over 40 enemy weapon caches were uncovered in the JFO area.

The seized items include anti-tank mines, grenades, almost 500 explosive devices and over 300 kg of TNT.

The caches were equipped by the so-called L/DNR IAFs. Instructed by their handlers, they planned to carry out subversive activity in the East of Ukraine.

The SSU investigation led to 8-year imprisonment of a member of an intelligence network of Russian special services. The agent was involved in the preparation of a series of explosions in the JFO area; she was detained while attempting to equip an explosives cache in Donetsk region.

Moreover, in September 2021, the SSU found two militants’ caches in Donetsk and Luhansk regions and seized:

  • almost 40 kg of TNT,
  • a large number of anti-tank and anti-personnel mines,
  • rounds for anti-aircraft guns and large-caliber machine guns.

In Luhansk region, in the village of Bobrove:

law enforcement officers uncovered a cache in an underground storage of a house that formerly belonged to the so-called First Deputy Head of LNR Government and seized:

  • 2 anti-tank rocket launchers;
  • 20 RGD-5 grenades with fuses;
  • almost 4,500 rounds of various caliber.

In Donetsk region, Pokrovskyi district:

the SSU exposed a cache equipped by a sniper of the so called Vostok battalion on the premises of a country house. The items seized include:

  • a Kalashnikov assault rifle with two filled magazines,
  • over 0.5 kg of TNT,
  • 3 electric detonators,
  • 2 grenade launcher shells,
  • 2 RGD-5 grenades with fuses,
  • over 2,500 rounds of various caliber,
  • 5 smoke bombs,
  • 23 remote controlled flares.

The relevant investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute all individuals involved in crimes against the state security of Ukraine.
