Dnipro city: SBU detains members of the organized criminal group involved in extortion and robberies
In Dnipro city, the SBU detained a leader and members of an organized criminal group that terrorized entrepreneurs and residents of several regions. Law enforcement officers documented extortion of huge amount of money from citizens.
Allegedly, the offenders systematically extorted money from businessmen, including small businesses. In case of non-payment, they used psychological pressure and threatened physical violence. Bandits also committed robberies and other serious crimes that threatened human life and health.
SBU operatives established that offenders demanded from an IT entrepreneur to provide the software developed by him. If not, the attackers demanded additional USD 180,000 from the victim.
Law enforcement also documented extortion of a monthly payment from an owner of the vehicle service station and a representative of tennis club. After payment, the offenders promised not to interfere in victims’ business and not to threaten them.
Officers of the SBU special unit detained five members of the criminal group while receiving regular payments from various entrepreneurs. They were served notices of suspicion of brigandism and extortion, two others- of brigandism. Custody is being chosen as a type of detention.
Immediate investigative actions were carried out, including searches in offenders’ offices, residences and cars.
Investigation is underway within the criminal proceedings to bring other group members to justice.
