Kyiv city: SBU detains ISIS militant

In Kyiv city, SBU detained a leader of the Islamic State international terrorist organization, who is on the Interpol’s wanted list.

Allegedly, the perpetrator, being a native of a post-Soviet country, was one of the ISIS leaders. Earlier, he was a deputy of the well-known Chechen radical Islamist Akhmed Chatayev, who is suspected of organizing a terrorist attack at Istanbul Ataturk Airport in 2016. The terrorist participated in hostilities in Syria and Iraq. He also was responsible for the recruitment and training of militants, as well as organization of terrorist attacks.

In 2018, the terrorist illegally came to Ukraine using the forged documents. In Kyiv region, he organised a criminal group, which included natives of Central Asia. According to intelligence, the terrorist also coordinated the activity of ISIS cells abroad.

Consequently, SBU officers detained the terrorist in Kyiv city. The detainee is arrested for 40-days. Legal proceeding over extradition was initiated. 

In addition, SBU officers are checking possible involvement of terrorist and members of the criminal group in preparing terrorist attacks in Ukraine.
