Kyiv: SBU detains State Emergency Service official for USD 70,000 extortion
In Kyiv, SBU detained an official of the Emergency Prevention Department of the State Emergency Service, who, together with two intermediaries, received USD 70,000 for issuing permits.
The SBU operatives documented that the official extorted money from a representative of a large enterprise for assistance in issuing an expert’s certificate on fire safety of a production facility with an area of more than 5,000 square meters, without the actual visit of the expert. He also extorted money for the conformity certificate of material and technical base to fire safety standards. Two perpetrator’s contacts were involved in the deal as intermediaries.
The SBU documented the transfer of the first part of the bribe (USD 10,000) to the intermediaries. Special forces “A” detained them near a restaurant in the center of Kyiv after receiving the remaining amount.
The SES official was detained in his office. USD 1,200 of the first "tranche" were seized.
During the searches of the perpetrators’ residences and offices, the law enforcement officers seized evidence proving the illegal activity.
Currently, it is planned to serve them a notice of suspicion of committing crimes under Part 4 of Art. 368, part 2 of Art. 368-4 and Part 1 of Art. 369 of the Criminal code of Ukraine, and choose custody as a form of detention.
The investigation is ongoing.
The operation was conducted by the SBU Main Directorate for Combating Corruption and Organized Crime jointly with the Territorial Office of the State Bureau of Investigation located in Kyiv city under the supervision of the Prosecutor's Office of Kyiv city.
