The SSU Military Counterintelligence is protecting defence potential of Ukraine from subversive activities of Russia’s special services. Since the beginning of 2021, over 90 criminal proceedings have been initiated for treason, terrorism and participation in illegal armed formations.

The SSU operations resulted in 37 convictions, including for disclosing military secrets.

Multi-stage operations of the SSU led to exposing over 20 agents of Russian special services and 18 militants in the East of Ukraine.

Overall, the operations of Military Counterintelligence led to opening of 642 criminal proceedings and helped prevent UAH 5.4 b (USD 207 m) of state losses.

7 corrupt officials were apprehended ‘red-handed’.

Luhansk region:

The SSU together with Ukrainian military detained a member of the IAF of the so-called ‘LNR’ on the demarcation line. Armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest, the militant approached the JFO positions.

It was established that in 2016 he joined the IAF. While in its ranks, he participated in the armed resistance to the ATO/JFO forces.

Rivne region:

The SSU prevented hand-over of defence-related information to Russian military intelligence. A Ukrainian military serviceman, who collected mobilization data for the Russian services, was involved in the illegal activity.

Donetsk region:

The SSU exposed a former militant who forged documents to join a Ukrainian military unit.

According to the investigation, in 2014 he was a member of the IAF of the so-called ‘DNR’. It was established that the militant carried firearms and served at a checkpoint.

Later, he left the group and was in hiding for a long time. He then decided to join a JFO unit and submitted untruthful personal data to the enlistment office.

In addition, over this period, the SSU Military Counterintelligence uncovered 10 caches in Eastern Ukraine. The items seized included:

over 100 anti-tank grenades,

over 480 combat hand grenades,

almost 70,000 rounds of ammunition of various calibers.

The SSU is acting upon the uncovered illegal activities to bring to justice all the individuals involved in crimes against state security of Ukraine.
