SBU MCI detains corrupt official of Ministry of Defense
The SBU Military Counterintelligence officers detained a head of a division of the Main Logistics Directorate of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for bribe-taking.
The operatives established that the official demanded UAH 400,000 (USD 14,000) from a businessman for making changes to some technical conditions for the manufacture of military products. These “changes” actually guaranteed businessman’s victory in tenders for the supply of such products to the Ministry of Defense.
The military officer also blackmailed the businessman that, in case of delay in transferring a bribe, he would make a decision in favor of the competitors.
The law enforcement detained the official in his office while receiving the first part of the bribe in the amount of UAH 100,000 (USD 3,500).
During the investigation, the officers seized the documentation that indicates the intention to make corrupt changes to the technical conditions, and other evidence that would be attached to the case.
The investigation is ongoing upon the fact of bribe- taking. The issues of serving the suspect a notice of suspicion and choosing a type of detention are being resolved. The Article of the Criminal Code of Ukraine provides for twelve years of imprisonment for this crime.
The operation was conducted jointly with the Territorial Department of the State Bureau of Investigation, located in Kyiv city, under the procedural supervision of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office in the Military and Defense Sphere of the Central Region.
