Zaporizzhia region: SBU detains corrupt head of local prosecutor's office

The Security Service of Ukraine exposed the prosecutor of one of the local prosecutor's offices of Zaporizzhia region on bribe-taking. The official extorted money for closing a fabricated criminal case for the repair of social facilities.

Allegedly, the prosecutor received bribes from government officials and contractors who were reconstructing a cultural center and the administrative building of a village council. In the case of refusal to pay the "tribute", the prosecutor threatened to initiate criminal proceedings on false charges. He promised to solve the "issue" for 10% of the contract value.

The SBU documented the fact of extorting USD 10,000 from a local official for "closing the case".

The law enforcement detained the suspect on the outskirts of one of the towns of Mykhailivskyi district while receiving part of the bribe. During the detention, the prosecutor resisted arrest and tried to flee the crime scene.

The issue of serving the detainee suspicion notice of bribe-taking is being settled.

The investigation is ongoing to establish other facts of his criminal activity and persons possibly involved in corrupt activities.

The operation was carried out jointly with the Territorial Department of the State Bureau of Investigation located in Melitopol city, under the supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
