Since start of Russian hybrid aggression, SSU Counterintelligence exposes 20 Russian diplomats on spying and detains hundreds of saboteurs

The SSU Counterintelligence Department is working systematically to prevent and counteract to the threats of Russian hybrid aggression against Ukraine. Since 2014, the SSU has dismantled over 30 intelligence networks in various regions of Ukraine. Over 180 criminals have been convicted of treason and espionage.

In addition, over 20 serving members of Russian intelligence working in Ukraine as diplomats were exposed. Due to the SSU efforts, they were declared persona non grata.

Over this period, Ukrainian Counterintelligence dismantled over 300 subversive and reconnaissance groups. 26 individuals were detained in attempts to blow up critical infrastructure entities, including defence facilities.

The courts have sentenced over 250 militants to various terms of imprisonment for crimes against Ukraine’s state security. Among them are the leaders and members of illegal armed formations of the so-called L/DNR terrorist groups.

In a large-scale special operation, the SSU dismantled an FSB intelligence network that operated in Kyiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Zhytomyr and Chernihiv regions. The agents were preparing acts of sabotage; their targets included combat aircraft at one of the Ukrainian military airfields.

The items seized from the group included 3 kg of TNT with electric detonators and anti-tank rocket propelled grenades.

JFO area:

The SSU Counterintelligence detained a saboteur of Russian special services in an attempt to blow up a tank with ammonia at one of the industrial facilities in Luhansk region.

Two RPG-22 anti-tank rocket launchers were seized from the detainee. Before the attempt, the individual had withdrawn the weapons from the militants’ cache.

Kharkiv:

The SSU exposed an agent of Russian military intelligence. Instructed by his handlers, the spy collected classified information on the latest Ukrainian armored vehicles.

The investigation established that the agent tried to obtain technical documentation related to the development and production of the
T-84BM Oplot battle tank.

Kherson region:

The SSU exposed another GRU agent. The individual carried out reconnaissance and subversive activities in the region.

According to the investigation, the agent was collecting intelligence on the protection of a strategic critical infrastructure facility in the South of Ukraine.

During the search of his residence, the law enforcement found weapons, ammunition and explosives.

Luhansk region:

The SSU detained a Russian spy. The foreigner arrived in the region to gather intelligence on the JFO, location of units, as well as on the latest models of Ukrainian weapons and military equipment.

The SSU is acting upon the uncovered facts of Russia’s hybrid aggression to bring to justice all the individuals involved in crimes against state security of Ukraine.
