SSU CI operations lead to over 100 criminal proceedings on treason, espionage and terrorism in 2021
Since the start of 2021, the SSU CI has exposed and dismantled 4 intelligence networks of Russian special services that operated in Ukraine, detaining 22 enemy agents, 2 of them ‘red handed’ in attempts to commit subversive and terrorist acts.
Two Russian diplomats engaged in intelligence activity have been declared persona non grata.
CI efforts also led to terminating of accreditations of 5 foreign diplomats for activities that violated the UN Vienna Convention.
Over the 9 months of 2021, the courts handed down 84 verdicts on cases of treason, espionage and participation in terrorist groups.
In a large-scale special operation, the SSU CI took down an FSB intelligence network. The agents operated in Kyiv, Odesa, Mykolayiv, Zhytomyr and Chernihiv regions. The network was preparing a number of subversions. One of their targets was combat aircraft at one of Ukrainian military airfields.
During the searches, the investigators seized a large arsenal of weapons, explosives and ammunition, including almost 3 kg of TNT with electric detonators, anti-tank rocket-propelled grenades and Kalashnikov rifles.
Luhansk region:
The SSU detained a spy of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU). Following his handlers’ instructions, he intended to collect intelligence on JFO units in the region.
The spy was interested in information on location of military units as well as on the latest models of Ukrainian weapons and military equipment.
Kirovograd region:
SSU CI officers detained an FSB agent who was collecting information on the servicemen of the Special Operations Forces unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as on representatives of local authorities.
Cherkasy region:
SSU CI officers exposed yet another Russian GRU agent. The spy was apprehended while receiving secret information on an ammunition depot in the region.
Mykolayiv:
SSU CI exposed on treason an employee of a strategic enterprise.
He had been recruited by Russian special services to gather information on the latest developments in Ukrainian military equipment, including UAV’s.
In addition to that, the SSU dismantled a smuggling channel organized by current and former MFA officials. Officials used diplomatic documents in order to smuggle excise goods to the EU.
Over the reporting period, the SSU took down 6 organized groups that specialized in unlawful legalization of foreigners in Ukraine. Their clients included people from countries with a high terrorist threat.
Acting upon the uncovered facts of illegal activity, the SSU CI is working to identify and to bring to justice other persons involved in crimes against state security of Ukraine.
