Following SSU investigation, GRU agent sentenced to 15 years in prison for adjusting strikes on Zaporizhzhia
Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, another agent of russian military intelligence (better known as ‘GRU’), who operated in Zaporizhzhia, has been convicted to 15 years in prison. The perpetrator was detained in January 2024 when he was preparing a new series of russian missile and bomb attacks on the city.
On the instructions of his GRU handler, the spy tried to identify local plants that produce ammunition for the AFU rocket and artillery weapons.
His other task was to search for Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile systems and radar stations in the region. The ruscists needed these data to plan routes of their missiles and drones evading Ukrainian air defences.
Further, the agent planned to get a job at one of the defence plants in Zaporizhzhia to obtain information directly about the storage locations of the manufactured weapons and ammunition.
According to the investigation, the asset used a sophisticated encryption system in a messenger app to communicate with the enemy. The system was developed by his ‘liaison’ - a military encryption specialist of the russian ministry of defence.
The SSU identified the enemy accomplice at an early stage, documented his crimes and detained him at his home in Zaporizhzhia.
The traitor is an ex-officer of a local unit of the disbanded ‘militsiya’, who was remotely recruited by the russian intelligence service through his former groupmate, an official of the russian MoD.
To collect information, the agent used his personal connections and drove around the city, recording locations of targets on his mobile phone camera.
Following the SSU’s investigation, the court found the accused guilty under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).
The operation and investigation were carried out by the SSU Office in Zaporizhzhia region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
