Following SSU’s investigation, russia’s GRU agent sentenced to 15 years in prison for spying on Defence Forces staffs in Kharkiv and Chernivtsi
Based on the SSU’s evidence, the court convicted another enemy agent to a real prison term. He collected intelligence on location of Ukraine’s Defence Forces and critical infrastructure facilities in the eastern and western oblasts.
The aggressor was primarily interested in locations of the AFU, the SSU and the SBGS in Kharkiv region and Bukovyna.
The informant also provided the occupiers with electronic coordinates of key bridges and power substations in both regions.
The SSU detained the individual ‘red-handed’ when he was covertly photographing a military facility in Chernivtsi in May this year.
The court sentenced him to 15 years in prison, following the SSU’s investigation.
According to the inquiry, the enemy accomplice is a resident of Chernivtsi who moved to Kharkiv in 2021 and worked there as an internet setup technician.
After the full-scale invasion began, he was recruited remotely by an officer of the GRU (the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces).
The man came to the aggressor’s attention because of his anti-Ukrainian publications on the banned Odnoklassniki.
During his stay in Kharkiv, the enemy asset monitored locations of Ukrainian checkpoints and fortifications in the city and passed geolocations of local energy facilities to the GRU.
Following his handler’s instruction, he then returned to Chernivtsi under the pretext of visiting relatives.
However, the main purpose of his ‘trip’ was to spy on the regional SSU office, the border guard unit and the local military enlistment office.
An anonymous messenger app was used to communicate with the russian intelligence service.
Based on the evidence, the court found the accused guilty under two Articles of the CCU:
- 111.2 (high treason committed under martial law);
- 436-2.2, 436-2.3 (justification, recognition as lawful, denial of russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, glorification of its participants).
The investigation was carried out by the SSU in Chernivtsi region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
