Following SSU investigation, agent of russian GRU sentenced to 15 years in prison for spying on AFU military echelons in Cherkasy region

Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, an agent of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’), who operated in Cherkasy oblast, has been convicted to imprisonment.

The perpetrator was tracking the directions of movement of the Armed Forces trains and the locations of railway junction stations where they made stops.

The occupiers also hoped to get from their asset the coordinates of the Defense Forces’ weapons depots and hospitals where Ukrainian soldiers were being treated.

In case of receiving the intelligence, the enemy planned to use it to prepare missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian targets.

The SSU detained the traitor in February 2024. Action was taken to protect the locations of the Defense Forces.

According to the investigation, the enemy agent is a 46-year-old native of Luhansk region, who moved to Cherkasy region in April 2022 as an internally displaced person and was later recruited remotely by the GRU.

To do that, the russians used his old acquaintance, a militant of enemy occupation troops fighting on the eastern front.

It was through him that the agent kept in touch with the russian military intelligence. He used an anonymous chat in a messenger app, where he sent photos of potential targets with detailed descriptions and geolocations.

During the searches of the suspect’s home, the SSU seized a mobile phone which he used to contact his ‘liaison’.

After the SSU’s investigation, the accused was found guilty under Article 111.2 of the CCU – high treason, committed under martial law.

The court sentenced him to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The investigation was conducted by the SSU Cherkasy Office under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
