Luhansk region: SBU helps to imprison Russian FSB agent to 10 years
SBU helped to convict Russian FSB agent, who arrived from the temporarily occupied territory in July of this year, in order to commit sabotage at the critical infrastructure facility in Luhansk region.
SBU investigators under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor's Office found that during 2014-2018 a resident of the temporarily occupied Rovenky city was a member of various pro-Russian IAF: so-called LNR garrison headquarters, LNR border guard service and 15th battalion USSR Bryanka. He was also on duty at checkpoints, conducted intelligence, as well as participated in hostilities against ATO/JFO forces.
During the pre-trial investigation, in autumn 2019 he was recruited by Russian FSB representative to commit sabotage in Ukraine-controlled Severodonetsk city. If succeeded, a representative of foreign special service promised the agent to help to take a job in the FSB. The offender received instructions via electronic communication channels.
On July 7, the suspect came to Severodonetsk city. He had to take two RPG-22 grenade launchers out from a cache and fire at ammonia containers located on the territory of Azot Severodonetsk Association.
SBU CI officers detained the saboteur on taking out the munitions from the cache.
At the time, almost 4,500 tons of liquid ammonia were in warehouse. According to experts, violating the integrity of the cache could have led to an contamination of over 1200 sq. km. of the territory. 35 settlements with a population of more than half a million people could suffer terrible consequences.
During the pre-trial investigation,
Severodonetsk city court of Luhansk region found the offender guilty of high treason, preparing for the sabotage and purchasing rounds without license. Additionally, he was convicted of trespass against territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine in prior conspiracy by a group of persons.
