Following SSU and SBI’s investigation, russian FSB officer to be tried for cyberattacks on Ukrainian government websites

The SSU and the SBI have collected evidence against an officer of russia’s FSB who worked with the Armageddon hacker group to conduct cyberattacks on Ukrainian Internet resources.

The indictment has been submitted to the court. The employee of the russian special service is accused of high treason.

According to the investigation, the accused is a former SSU officer who, after Crimea’s annexation in 2014, betrayed his oath and remained in Simferopol to serve in the ranks of russia’s FSB.

Since then, he has been helping the russian service to carry out sabotage activities against Ukraine. In particular, the former SSU officer interacted with the Armageddon hackers, who conducted over 5,000 cyberattacks on government agencies and critical infrastructure facilities in Ukraine.

In November 2021, the SSU Cyber Department established the identities of the Armageddon hackers. They were officers of the ‘Crimean’ FSB, as well as traitors who defected to the enemy during the occupation of Crimea in 2014.

The SSU served suspicion notices to 8 members of the Armageddon, and indictments were sent to court against 4 hackers.

In 2022, the National Security and Defence Council’s decision to impose 5-year sanctions on eight members of this group came into force.

The group is the FSB’s special project targeting Ukraine. This ‘line of work’ is coordinated by the FSB’s 18th centre (Information security centre) based in moscow.
