The SSU has collected evidence against the rector of Uzhhorod Orthodox Cathedral, who is involved in inciting religious hatred.

In December 2022, he repeatedly publicly insulted religious feelings of Ukrainians who wished to celebrate Christmas on December 25.

The SSU documented over 7 episodes when the priest humiliated religious feelings of citizens of other faiths and tried to create hostile attitude towards them.

The forensic linguistic examination initiated by the SSU confirmed criminal actions of the church rector.

Based on the collected evidence, the cleric was notified of suspicion under the Article 161.1 of the CCU (violation of equality of citizens based on their race, nationality, region, religious beliefs and other grounds).

Court is to decide on custody as a measure of restraint. The investigation is ongoing.

We emphasize that the SSU adheres to the principle of impartiality to any religious denomination and respects the right of every citizen to freedom of worldview and religion, as defined by the Constitution of Ukraine.

The SSU Office in Zakarpattia region exposed the offence jointly with the National Police under the supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
