SBU charges extremists tasked by Russian special services with attempted arson of mosque in Odesa
SBU finished its pretrial investigation regarding two extremists detained while attempting to set an Islamic mosque on fire before celebrations of the Crimean Tatar Flag Day and Ukraine’s Constitution Day.
To remind, SBU officers prevented arson of an Islamic building in Odesa and detained members of an informal radical group in June 2020.
The pretrial investigation established that the offenders were tasked by Russian special services. The attack was aimed at destabilization of social and political situation in the country, breach of the peace, intimidation of the population, fomentation of racial and ethnic animosity.
The detainees face trial upon the fact of creation of a terrorist group or organization and terrorist act. The bill of indictment was sent to court. If found guilty, the offenders will face fifteen years in prison.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of the Odesa Region Prosecutor’s Office.
