SSU and SBI investigate bribe-taking judge who went to Caribbean under pretext of official trip

The SSU and the SBI have collected new evidence regarding a judge of Brovary Town and District Court of Kyiv region, who is already suspected of corruption.

The official is involved in fraud and forgery, which allowed him to illegally travel abroad in the summer of 2023 under the pretext of an official trip.

As established by the investigation, instead the judge and his partner went on a cruise ship to the Caribbean.

To do this, he used a counterfeit invitation letter to participate in a conference on assistance to IDPs, families with children and orphans from Ukraine in the EU.

No such events were held in the said country at that time.

The official’s friend, a lawyer, helped him obtain the fake invitation.

Based on the evidence, the judge and his accomplice were notified of suspicion under two Articles of the CCU:

  • 27.2, 27.5, 358.3, 358.4 (forgery of documents, seals, stamps and forms, sale or use of forged documents, seals, stamps, upon prior conspiracy, by a group);
  • 190.2 (fraud, committed repeatedly or upon prior conspiracy, by a group).

In September 2023, the suspect had been exposed after taking a bribe for making the ‘necessary’ decision in a property dispute.

The operation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
