Following SSU investigation, FSB hackers sentenced in absentia for over 5,000 cyberattacks on Ukrainian authorities

Based on the evidence collected by the SSU and the State Bureau of Investigations, two members of the FSB hacker group Armageddon have been convicted in absentia to imprisonment.

According to the investigation, they carried out more than 5,000 cyberattacks on government agencies and critical infrastructure facilities in Ukraine.

The largest number of them was directed at the electronic systems of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Development.

The purpose of the hacker attacks was to gain access to the electronic document management system and servers with classified information of government institutions.

The key organizers of these sabotage activities are two former employees of the SSU Office in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea who betrayed their oath in 2014.

Then they voluntarily joined the FSB ‘branch’ on the temporarily occupied peninsula.

Following the investigation by Ukrainian law enforcement, the court sentenced both traitors to 15 years in prison.

They were found guilty under two Articles of the CCU:

  • 111.1 (high treason);
  • 361.2 (unauthorized interference with computers and automated systems).

The trial was held in a special court proceeding in absentia.

The term of sentence will begin on the day the convicts are apprehended.

The special pre-trial investigation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
