Following SSU investigation, russian gru informant who spied on artillery of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Mykolaiv region is sentenced

Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, another informant of the russian military intelligence has been convicted to prison. The perpetrator collected information on the deployment and movement of the defence forces in the frontline area of the Mykolaiv region.

He tried to identify the firing positions of the Ukrainian artillery, including the HIMARS combat teams, on the orders of the Russian secret service.

If the informant received intelligence, he planned to pass it on to the occupiers for preparing targeted missile and drone strikes on the positions of Ukrainian troops.

However, the enemy's plans were thwarted by SSU counterintelligence officers, who detained the perpetrator during his reconnaissance 'raid' in August 2022.

The court sentenced the perpetrator to 11 years in prison, taking into account his cooperation with the investigation.

According to the investigation, the convict, a local resident, was remotely recruited by russian military intelligence after the beggining of russia's full-scale invasion.

The man came to the attention of the occupiers as a supporter of the kremlin's narratives on various social networks.

He received an offer of covert cooperation with the aggressors on his mobile phone via a popular messenger.

Later, the traitor communicated with a staff member of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (known as gru) via an anonymous chat.

After the SSU’s investigation, the court found the perpetrator guilty under Article 114.2-3 of the CCU (unauthorised dissemination of information on the movement of the Armed Forces committed under martial law).

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Mykolaiv region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
