SSU Military Counterintelligence exposes dozens of attempts to pass sensitive defence information to foreign services in 2021
The SSU Military Counterintelligence is protecting Ukraine’s defence potential from the threats of Russia’s hybrid aggression. In 2021, over 30 agents were exposed on covert gathering of intelligence, including on the organization of military management in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
To obtain classified defence information, representatives of Russian special services set up intelligence networks and used secure communication channels.
During the operations, computer equipment, electronic media and other items with evidence of criminal acts were seized from perpetrators.
In addition, the SSU Military Counterintelligence identified 26 foreigners involved in subversive activities against the state. They were banned from entering Ukraine.
In the course of large-scale special operations, 35 members of the IAFs of the temporarily occupied territories were neutralized. According to investigations, they actively participated in hostilities against Ukrainian military in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
The SSU pre-trial investigation led to conviction of two criminals. The court found them guilty of crimes under Article 110 (trespass against territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine) and Article 258-3 (participation in a terrorist group or terrorist organization) of the CCU and sentenced to imprisonment for 10 and 8 years.
In the course of investigative and operational activities near the contact line, the SSU uncovered over 100 incidents of illicit circulation of military weapons.
The munitions seized during searches include:
- over 150 kg of explosives,
- 540 anti-tank rocket launchers,
- a large amount of ammunition, including almost 200,000 rounds of various calibers.
In 2021, the SSU exposed dozens of schemes of embezzling budget funds and obtaining illegal benefit.
The SSU blocked the attempts to smuggle components for Ukrainian military transport aircraft.
The Service also exposed several schemes of illegal land transfer. This prevented the loss of almost 1,000 hectares of state land worth over UAH 600 mln (USD 21 mln).
Investigations are underway to establish all the circumstances of illegal activities and bring the involved to justice.
