For six months SBU liquidates 11 drug labs and seizes smuggled goods worth USD 5.4 million
In the first half of 2020, the SBU liquidated 11 drug labs, seized 334 kilos of drugs, 27 kilos of psychotropic substances and 188 kilos of precursors.
Law enforcement also seized smuggled goods and revealed violations of customs rules totaling UAH 150 million (USD 5.4 million).
Countering the international drug trafficking is one of the most important areas of state security and cooperation with foreign special services. Therefore, this year, SBU investigations helped to convict 7 members of the so-called drug syndicate "Khimprom" that organized an extensive network of drug trafficking. The offenders sold drugs for cryptocurrency in the former CIS countries.
Another 5 members of syndicate received notices of suspicion of committing crimes stipulated by Part 1 of Art.255, Part 3 of Art.209, Part 3 of Art.307 of the Criminal code of Ukraine. In total, 21 members of “Khimprom” were served notices of suspicion during 2019-2020.
The SBU conducted a large-scale operation together with Eurojust, Europol and law enforcement agencies of France, Poland and Slovakia. Due to fruitful cooperation, law enforcement eliminated transnational criminal group that manufactured and smuggled steroids. In the EU, law enforcement officers detained 24 people and seized assets totaling almost EUR 2.1 million.
In the first half of 2020, the SBU seized over 50 kg of cocaine worth almost UAH 200 million (USD 7.1 million) in Pivdennyi Sea Port. Smuggling of more than 277,000 precursor-containing pills from Europe and 12 kilograms of psychotropic substances from China was also blocked in Ukraine.
In total, the SBU and according to the SBU information were initiated 105 pre-trial investigations related to combating international drug trafficking in six months, including 31 under Art.305 of the Criminal code of Ukraine, 50 individuals were convicted.
Within the framework of combating smuggling, the SBU initiated 30 pre-trial investigations under Art.201 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, 15 criminals were convicted.
In Transcarpathia region, law enforcement detained a Slovak citizen who tried to smuggle 8.65 kilograms of mercury from Ukraine to the EU.
Three members of an organized criminal group were convicted of smuggling potent substances from China into Ukraine and organizing the production of counterfeit medicines under the guise of well-known brands.
Also, the SBU stopped the activity of two organized criminal groups engaged in the illegal production of excisable tobacco goods and its illegal transportation abroad.
