Foreign ship's crew member suspected of marine pollution

Pursuant to the SBU investigation, a member of the ship’s crew of a foreign vessel was announced suspicion of marine pollution. The harmful effects to the Ukrainian ecology, resulting from the pollution of the internal sea waters, are estimated at almost UAH 65.2 m. (USD 2.4 m.).

Allegedly, the marine pollution occurred in April 2020 due to the dumping of palm oil from a foreign vessel into the waters of the Pivdennyi Sea Port. Due to the violation of the vessel discharge procedure, almost 8.5 tons of pollutants got into the water.

The SBU documented that due to the actions of the ship's crew, Ukraine suffered losses of almost UAH 65.2 m. According to forensic environmental experts, the state budget suffered multi-million losses.

The chief officer of the sea vessel was served a notice of suspicion of marine pollution.

The investigation is ongoing to bring to justice all those involved and to compensate the damage caused to the state.

The operation was carried out under the supervision of the Dobroslav District Prosecutor's Office of Odesa region.
