Following SSU’s investigation, russian agent sentenced to 15 years in prison for spying on Ukrainian military equipment using hidden video recorder

Following an investigation by the SSU, another agent of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (known as ‘the GRU’) has been convicted to imprisonment.

The perpetrator collected intelligence on numbers and geolocation of personnel and military equipment of Ukraine’s Defence Forces in Mykolaiv region.

To covertly track the units of Ukrainian defenders, he used a video recorder hidden in his car.

The agent was instructed to identify location and monitor movement of the AFU’s military equipment in the frontline areas.

A messenger app was used to transmit the collected data to his handler, a GRU officer.

The occupiers needed the intelligence to prepare a series of air strikes on military targets in Ukraine.

The SSU Counterintelligence documented the suspect’s unlawful actions and detained him in Mykolaiv in September 2022.

Due to a prompt response, a series of enemy missile and drone attacks on Mykolaiv oblast was prevented.

Following the SSU’s investigation, the court found the accused guilty under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law) and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Mykolaiv oblast under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
