Following SSU investigation, head of FSB agent group sentenced to life imprisonment for preparing terrorist attacks against Defence Forces in Zaporizhzhia
Based on the evidence collected by the SSU, a resident (head) of an agent group of russia’s federal security service that operated in Zaporizhzhia has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The court also convicted his accomplice to 15 years behind bars.
In the spring of 2023, these individuals were preparing a series of terrorist attacks against the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and SSU special purpose units performing combat missions on the southern front.
To do this, the agents were tracking temporary bases and movement of Ukrainian defenders.
They sent the data to the FSB via a messenger app as markings of military facilities on Google maps with detailed descriptions and photos.
The enemy planned to carry out targeted missile strikes using the coordinates received.
The FSB was also preparing a plan to physically eliminate Ukrainian servicemen by detonating explosive devices, which they intended to install in the areas where the Defence Forces were concentrated.
To prepare the attacks, the agents received money from their russian handlers to the bank account of the group’s resident.
The SSU Counterintelligence uncovered the traitors, documented their crimes and detained them during a special operation in Zaporizhzhia in early May 2023.
According to the investigation, the group’s head is a 52-year-old local resident. He came to the attention of the russians because of his pro-kremlin views, which he demonstratively expressed.
In late December 2022, the man was remotely recruited by an FSB officer and was given a task.
To carry it out, the agent engaged an accomplice who worked as a driver for the head of one of the district administrations of the city. Later, the network’s head recruited five other residents of the region.
During the searches, the SSU seized automatic weapons, ammunition, combat grenades and mobile phones with evidence of the crimes.
Following the SSU’s investigation, the court found the chief agent and his accomplice, the official’s driver, guilty under Articles 28.2 and 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law, by a group, upon prior conspiracy).
Investigations are ongoing regarding other members of the enemy cell.
The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Zaporizhzhia region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
