Following SSU and Prosecutor’s Office investigation, deputy who detonated grenades during village council meeting in Zakarpattia gets life sentence

Based on the investigation of the SSU and Zakarpattia Region Prosecutor’s Office, a member of Keretsky village council in Zakarpattia has been sentenced to life imprisonment for committing a terrorist attack in a government building.

On 15 December 2023, he blew up three RGD-5 and F-1 fragmentation grenades in the village council session hall.

The explosions injured 26 people, and two of them later died of serious injuries. One of the victims died the next day after the attack, and the other a month later.

According to the investigation, the attacker had plotted the crime in advance. First, he used his connections in criminal circles to purchase combat grenades, and then hid them in his home.

On the day of the village council meeting, the deputy brought the munitions to the premises of the state institution.

He left the meeting room briefly to prepare the grenades. Returning back, the perpetrator took them from his jacket pockets and threw them one by one on the floor in the room, where almost all the council members were present.

Based on the evidence, the court found the accused guilty under two Articles of the CCU:

  • 258.3 (terrorist act resulting in deaths of people);
  • 263.1 (carrying, storage, acquisition of explosive devices without a legal permit).

The investigation was carried out by the SSU Zakarpattia Office under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
