SBU helps to convict 192 offenders for encroaching on integrity of Ukraine and terrorist activities in 2020
During 2020, courts convicted 192 offenders for encroaching on Ukraine’s territorial integrity and inviolability, as well as for terrorist activities. All of them were detained by the SBU.
SBU work in the field of national statehood protection resulted in 335 criminal proceedings.
In particular, the SBU prevented seven terrorist acts and detained 10 people involved in preparation and commission of it.
Also, law enforcement prevented terrorist attacks near the French Boulevard Mall in Kharkiv, near the hospital in Severodonetsk, at the Rubizhne railway station, and on the territory of PJSC Severodonetsk Azot Association.
The SBU also took part in special operations to release hostages in the cities of Lutsk and Kyiv, detained the organizers of explosions in capital, as well as neutralized explosive devices.
To protect national statehood, the SBU cooperates with foreign partner intelligence services. Due to interaction, 644 foreigners involved in terrorist and extremist organizations were barred from entering Ukraine. For the same reasons, five more foreigners were deported and 74 were forcibly returned to their native countries.
The SBU jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued 73 démarches to foreign representatives who conducted anti-Ukrainian activities and supported annexation or visits to Crimea.
In addition, in 2020 the SBU CI initiated 304 criminal proceedings for treason, espionage, sabotage and creation of a terrorist organization.
For example, in September 2020, CI officers detained a Russian FSB agent in the city of Rivne, who intended to sabotage a regional critical infrastructure facility.
101 convictions also came into force. For example, Shu Yuanjie, a Chinese citizen, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for espionage.
O. Smorodinov, a Ukrainian who cooperated with the FSB, was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment.
E. Aheev, the Ukrainian who worked for the FSB and tried to blow up an ammonia storage facility on the territory of PJSC Severodonetsk Azot - to 10 years.
Three Ukrainians and a Russian were imprisoned for participation in a terrorist organization up to eight years.
The SBU CI also exposed over 300 cases of acquisition of foreign citizenship by representatives of state authorities.
Also, the CI exposed the facts of abuse of office by officials of the Ministry of Defense, the National Guard and state-owned enterprises. Losses caused to the state budget due to such actions top UAH 1,72 b. (USD 61 m.).
