Foreign spy exposed by SBU is sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment

The SBU CI Department investigation helped to sentence a citizen of the People’s Republic of China Shu Yuanjie for espionage.  The next ten years he is going to serve time in jail on the territory of Ukraine.

The investigation proved that being a Phd in Technical Science the spy conducted intelligence under the guise of official technical sci-tech cooperation between the PRC and Ukraine. The CI established that the spy graduated from the Chinese Academy of Military Science and Physical-Chemical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Russia. The spy has worked for military-industrial corporation specializing in munition production as well as for the Xi’an Modern Chemistry Research Institute.  For high performance at this work he was granted the First-degree Award of the Defence Ministry of the PRC “For scientific-technical progress of the army”.

During his business trips to Ukraine, the spy tried to involve a group of Ukrainian scientists into the confidential cooperation. For money reward the foreigner planned to acquire the secret projects of rocket and space industry owned by the state.

SBU operatives caught a foreigner red-handed on the attempt of getting secret projects.

The court found him guilty of committing a crime under Part 1 Article 114 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The verdict came into force.

The research institutions not for the first time are targeted by foreign special services.

Thus, in July 2011, SBU CI detained two officials of  Economics and Trade Mission of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, who tried to acquire secret rocket projects. They are sentenced to eight years of imprisonment for espionage.
