Lviv region: SBU exposes officials who helped conscripts to evade service

Officers of the Security Service of Ukraine exposed military and medical personnel on two facts of bribe extortion from conscripts for assistance in evading military service.

The chief of a branch of one of the military units together with a colleague promised to "solve" the issue of noneffectiveness for service for USD 1,000.

Law enforcement officers detained the criminals on a hot spot near the military registration and enlistment office when he received the full amount of the bribe.

For the reward, one of the chiefs of the Lviv Regional Clinical Hospital also promised to solve the issue of evading conscription.

The SBU officers established, that the doctor offered his mediation in resolving the issues of unfitness of conscripts for military service. He promised to "negotiate" with the chiefs of one of the district military commissariats for exemption from military service due to health issues. The doctor estimated his "services" at UAH 21,500 (USD 800).

Law enforcement officers detained the suspect in his office while receiving the full amount of the illegal benefit. During the investigation, UAH 150,000 (USD 5,500), USD 600 and EUR 400 were found, the origin of which will be established by the investigation.

The criminal proceedings are initiated according to both facts under Part 3 Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The investigation is ongoing.

The operation was conducted jointly with the National Police under the supervision of the Military Prosecutor’s Office of Lviv garrison.
