Vasyl Maliuk: SSU will continue to fight the occupier on land, in the air, and at sea
During his tenure as Head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Vasyl Maliuk, a Hero of Ukraine and Lieutenant General, has transformed the SSU – for the first time in our state’s history – into an effective security service of a country at war. He has distinguished himself with a series of successful special operations that have written new pages in the history of this war.
One of the most notable was the special operation Spider Web, which dealt a powerful blow to russia’s nuclear triad by destroying 41 military aircraft at four ruscist airfields. Lieutenant General Maliuk personally coordinated the preparation and execution of this daring operation, which was conducted deep behind enemy lines.
He also planned and was responsible for three unique attacks on the Crimean Bridge: a truck bomb attack in 2022, a strike with Sea Baby maritime drones in 2023, and an underwater explosion in 2025.
A key factor in the success of the Security Service’s maritime operations has been the development and deployment of the unique Sea Baby combat drones. The result: 14 russian vessels destroyed and russia’s dominance in the Black Sea effectively ended.
During Lieutenant General Maliuk’s tenure, a russian Varshavianka-class submarine was hit for the first time in history while in port in Novorosiysk – by a Sub Sea Baby underwater drone.
The SSU has also been systematically hitting the occupier’s oil refining industry – a key source of funding for russia’s war against Ukraine – through its own deep-strike operations.
Counterintelligence efforts have been significantly strengthened. Today, the SSU prevents 80% of terrorist attacks planned by russian intelligence services in Ukraine. As a result of comprehensive counterintelligence measures, 128 enemy intelligence networks involving 563 individuals have been dismantled. Since 2022, Security Service investigators have notified more than 3,800 perpetrators of suspicion of high treason.
Those investigated include FSB agents in cassocks, who are currently the subject of over 180 criminal proceedings.
Another crucial line of work under Vasyl Maliuk’s leadership has been the systematic cleansing of the SSU of enemy moles. The Service has exposed more than ten russia’s agents within its ranks, including the high-ranking officials Dmytro Koziura and Oleh Kulinich, who were detained in person by General Maliuk.
Today, the Security Service is one of the key components of Ukraine’s Defence Forces. Together with comrades-in-arms from other units, SSU officers liberated Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions, as well as Zmiinyi Island; participated in Kursk operation; and continue to carry out missions in Pokrovsk sector and other complex areas of the front.
The SSU Special Operations Centre ‘A’ is consistently ranked among the top three most effective units in terms of destroying russian military equipment and manpower using UAVs. Nearly one in five tanks destroyed by Ukrainian defenders is credited to the Security Service.
Under Vasyl Maliuk’s leadership, the Security Service of Ukraine has undergone a profound transformation. Legislative changes have been initiated that have significantly strengthened the SSU’s ability to counter russian aggression, terrorism, sabotage, cyberattacks, and to protect critical infrastructure. Implementation of the SSU Development Strategy for 2025–2030 has begun; the number of personnel in the Special Operations Centre’s has been increased by law, and the jurisdiction has been restructured with a clear focus on national security.
‘The Security Service of Ukraine will continue to carry out its missions. We will continue to fight the occupiers on land, in the air, and at sea. We will penetrate deep into their rear and strike where they least expect it. We will do everything to ensure that our state remains strong and prosperous. Only our unwavering unity, mutual trust, and shared vision of the future can stop the enemy and break the backbone of its criminal army. God is with us. Strength, faith, and truth are on our side. Glory to Ukraine!’ – Vasyl Maliuk.
