SSU and National Police detain eight enemy accomplices involved in sabotage in Odesa and uncovered another recruitment attempt in Lviv

The SSU Counterintelligence and the National Police have detained another eight enemy agents who carried out sabotage in the south, and two individuals whom the enemy used unwittingly to carry out arson in western Ukraine.

They turned out to be men aged 19 to 73 who were recruited remotely by russia and offered easy money. The occupiers recruited two more individuals by posing as SSU officers.

In Odesa, a local unemployed man was caught red-handed as he was preparing to blow up a railway line while a train was passing, as ordered by the enemy.

The Security Service identified the agent at an early stage and detained him when he was trying to place an improvised explosive device under the rails.

It was established that the suspect had taken the explosives from a cache that the ruscists had set up earlier.

Seven other perpetrators were also apprehended in Odesa region for burning relay cabinets on the local railway to complicate the transport logistics of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

They used flammable mixtures and, after setting the fire, recorded it on camera to report to their handlers in russia.

In Lviv, two 19-year-old local residents were exposed. On enemy instructions, they set fire to a local post office and the entrance doors of several households.

As established by the SSU Counterintelligence, russian special services recruited the young men, posing as Security Service of Ukraine officers. They presented the assigned tasks as ‘participation in a special operation’.

According to the ‘scenario’ the enemy gave to the agents, ‘malicious individuals’ acting against Ukraine were hiding in these facilities.

In such way, russia intended to take advantage of the patriotism and trust of Ukrainians in the security forces in order to use them to carry out sabotage.

The detainees have been notified of suspicion, in accordance with the offences committed, under two Articles of the CCU:

  • 15.2, 28.2, 113.2 (sabotage, committed by a group, upon prior conspiracy, under martial law);
  • 194.4 (intentional destruction or damage to property by arson).

The suspects face between 10 years and life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operations were carried out by the SSU Offices in Odesa and Lviv regions in cooperation with the National Police under the procedural supervision of Odesa and Lviv regional Prosecutor’s Offices.
