SSU and National Police detain agent of russian intelligence who tried to blow up police squad in downtown Kyiv (video)
The Security Service and the National Police have detained an enemy agent who, on the order of russian intelligence, carried out a terrorist attack in Kyiv centre on 17 November this year.
On that day, a police unit responded to a call about domestic violence in an apartment block in Pechersk district.
When the police attempted to enter the flat, a tripwire with an F-1 grenade went off at the entrance to the premises.
As it turned out, no one lived in the apartment, and the ‘call’ with a woman’s voice to the police was a fake to lure the officers into a trap and kill them.
According to the investigation, the attack was plotted by the russian intelligence services. To carry it out, they remotely engaged a 43-year-old resident of Kyiv oblast. In the past, the individual had served 6 sentences for robbery, theft and prison break.
Before installing the booby trap, the agent fulfilled a ‘test’ task: he set fire to a relay cabinet on the railway near the capital and sent the video with this act to his handler.
After that, he received step-by-step instructions for a terrorist attack against Ukrainian law enforcement.
The man rented an apartment in downtown Kyiv, installed a tripwire with a live grenade, as well as video cameras that were supposed to record the explosion in real time.
As a result of professional police action, no one was injured in the explosion. Soon after, the perpetrator was apprehended in hot pursuit.
During the searches of his home, a mobile phone, SIM cards and clothes with evidence of the crime were seized.
SSU investigators have served the detainee a notice of suspicion under Article 258.2 of the CCU (terrorist act).
The suspect is in custody and faces up to 12 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Kyiv and Kyiv region in cooperation with the SSU Counterintelligence and the National Police under the procedural supervision of Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office.
