SSU classifies russia’s strike on nuclear fuel storage facility near Chernobyl NPP as war crime

Investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine consider the russian strike on the Centralised Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility, located near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, to be a war crime.

Criminal proceedings have been opened in relation to this incident under Article 438.1 of the CCU.

As established by the SSU’s investigative team, the russian armed forces carried out this strike using a Geran-2 type unmanned aerial vehicle at 02:05 on 7 June. Parts of the drone have already been found at the site of the strike.

The explosion damaged the spent nuclear fuel reception and reloading building and the IAEA administrative building.

It has also been established that the strike did not affect the storage facility’s operational process.

The radiation background is within normal limits; there are no fatalities or injuries.

Investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine, under the procedural supervision of the Kyiv Region Prosecutor’s Office, are taking comprehensive action to identify and punish those involved in this attack.
