SSU disrupts channel for smuggling steroids worth millions to Russia

The SSU dismantled a transnational criminal group engaged in transit trafficking of anabolic steroids via Ukraine to Russia.

According to the investigation, the ‘business’ was organized by residents of Odesa, Kyiv and border areas of Chernihiv region.

The group received a ‘package’ of steroids smuggled form Moldova, delivered it to Chernihiv region and transported it to Russia beyond customs control.

The channel has been in operation since the beginning of 2021 with monthly turnover up to UAH 1 mln (USD 38,000).

Within the criminal proceedings, investigators conducted searches at the suspects’ homes and storage locations in Chernihiv and Odesa regions and in Kyiv. Over 3,000 Metandienone pills and other evidence of illegal activity were seized.

The law enforcement detained the organizer of the smuggling channel. The detainee has been notified of suspicion of crimes under Article 201 (smuggling) and 321 (illegal production, transportation, storage for sale or sale of poisonous or potent substances) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The court has chosen custody as a measure of restraint.

The investigation is ongoing to identify and bring to justice other individuals involved.

The SSU Office in Chernihiv region carried out the operation under the supervision of the regional prosecutor’s office.
