SSU detains russian woman in hot pursuit for adjusting enemy September 7 strikes on Sumy

The SSU Counterintelligence has apprehended a russian informant who adjusted russia’s air attack on Sumy, a regional centre near the border, on the night of September 7.

The occupiers used Shahed-type kamikaze drones and missiles to carry out the attack.

According to the investigation, the russian citizen responsible for ‘guiding’ aggressor’s weapons at Sumy has a residence permit in Ukraine and has been living in the city for a long time.

After the start of russia’s full-scale invasion, the woman began to cooperate remotely with the GRU (main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces).

On the instructions of russian military intelligence, she collected information on sites where she believed Ukrainian defenders might be.

To gather intelligence, the GRU agent walked in the city, supposedly running some errands, or asked her friends, expecting they would unwittingly provide some information.

The spy sent the data to the russian intelligence service via a messenger app as text messages with coordinates of Ukrainian targets.

The woman was also working on another assignment from the GRU - to create her own agent network in Sumy.

To do this, the GRU asset was looking for ‘like-minded people’, whom she offered cooperation with the occupiers in the war against Ukraine.

During the searches, the SSU seized the mobile phone which was used for the sabotage activity against Ukraine.

SSU investigators have served the detained enemy agent a notice of suspicion under two Articles of the CCU:

  • 27.4, 111.2 (incitement to high treason under martial law);
  • 114-2.3 (unauthorized dissemination of information on transfer or deployment of the AFU or other lawful military formations, committed under martial law with the aim of providing such information to representatives of the state carrying out armed aggression against Ukraine, if it caused grave consequences).

The court is to decide on custody as a measure of restraint. The suspect is facing life imprisonment.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Sumy region jointly with the National Police under the procedural supervision of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
