SBU prevents smuggling of Scythian jewelry abroad
The SBU prevented the illegal export of Scythian-era jewelry. At international auctions, its cost ranges from USD 40,000.
Allegedly, an intermediary smuggled rarities ordered by European clients. He hired a courier to export the Scythian gold ornaments via Yahodyn checkpoint. The SBU seized from the courier’s personal belongings eleven Scythian pendants, made of yellow and white gold.
According to preliminary estimates, the confiscated jewelry is unique. It is considered as a cultural and historical heritage of our country.
The seized antiques will be sent for examination. Following the results, the SBU is going to serve the detainees suspicion notices of smuggling attempt.
After the investigation, transferring jewelry to the Museum Fund of Ukraine will be considered.
The operation was conducted by the SBU Main Directorate for Combating Corruption and Organized Crime jointly with the investigators of the SBU Main Office in Kyiv and Kyiv Region, Volyn Customs, under the supervision of Kyiv Region Prosecutor's Office.
