SSU shows wreckage of Oreshnik missile used by russia to attack Lviv oblast and classifies this strike as war crime (video)
The Security Service has located the wreckage of a russian ballistic missile that the enemy has used to strike Lviv region on the night of January 9, 2026. According to preliminary findings, the components found are those of the Oreshnik missile system.
The parts found at this point include:
- a stabilization and guidance unit (essentially the ‘brain’ of the missile);
- parts of the engine unit;
- fragments of the orientation mechanism;
- nozzles of the missile’s post-boost vehicle platform.
These fragments have the status of material evidence and are being prepared to be passed for further in-depth examination.
Investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine classify russia’s use of this weapon against Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure as a war crime.
According to preliminary data, the enemy launched a medium-range Oreshnik surface-to-surface missile from russia’s Kapustin Yar test range.
By attacking civilian targets in our country near the border with the EU, the kremlin attempted to destroy the region’s life-support infrastructure amid sharply deteriorating weather conditions.
SSU investigators are establishing all the circumstances, as well as the organisers and executors of this russian war crime, in order to bring them to justice.
A pre-trial investigation under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (war crimes) is carried out under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
