SSU conducts first interrogations of Chinese prisoners of war

The investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine have conducted first interrogations of prisoners of war from the People’s Republic of China, captured by the Defense Forces in Donetsk region. They are currently testifying about how they ended up in the war in Ukraine and what tasks they performed as part of the russian armed forces on the territory of our country.

These are two Chinese citizens: one was captured by the servicemen of the 2ndMechanized Battalion of the 157th Separate Mechanized Brigade near Tarasivka, the other – by the servicemen of the 1st Mechanized Battalion of the 81stSeparate Airmobile Brigade near Bilohorivka.

The captured foreign nationals do not have combat wounds. However, they are receiving the necessary medical care, as provided for by the Geneva Convention.

The captives were taken to Kyiv to conduct priority investigative measures and are held in proper conditions that meet the requirements of international law.

Communication with the prisoners is carried out through interpreters.

According to both foreigners, they were captured by the Ukrainian military on their first combat mission.

One of the Chinese soldiers, an unemployed man born in 1991, was recruited by a representative of the russian federation directly in China. In February 2025, he arrived in moscow and signed a contract.

The other, born in 1998, came to russia in December 2024, purportedly for tourist purposes. According to him, later, while in russia, he applied to sign a contract, responding to an online advertisement about recruitment and 2 million rubles payment.

The SSU is currently checking the testimonies of the prisoners and conducting the necessary investigative measures to establish all the circumstances of the Chinese citizens’ participation in russia’s war against Ukraine.

The investigation is carried out under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (war crimes).
