SSU ‘breaks’ russian serviceman who killed captured Ukrainian border guard and tried to conceal it

The SSU Military Counterintelligence and investigators have collected evidence against a russian soldier who shot a captured serviceman of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine during fighting in Sumy region on 18 June 2025.

The day after the crime, the ruscist was captured by the Defence Forces. While in custody, he tried to hide his guilt in order to evade punishment.

However, the Security Service reconstructed the chronology of all the suspect’s actions and documented the fact of the murder of the Ukrainian PoW.

As the investigation established, the war crime was committed by russian citizen Ivan Khamgushkeev (call sign ‘Buryat’) – a senior rifleman of the 2nd marine company of the 5th marine battalion of the 810th separate marine brigade of russia’s Black Sea fleet.

On 18 June 2025, the enemy serviceman, as part of an assault group, attacked Ukrainian positions near the village of Myropillia, Sumy region.

During the battle, a Ukrainian border guard was captured by the occupiers. Khamgushkeev and another russian soldier first interrogated him and then shot him with their service weapons.

‘Buryat’ and his accomplice shot the prisoner at point-blank range with Kalashnikov assault rifles, after which they reported the elimination of the Ukrainian defender to their command via radio.

The captive died on the spot as a result of the gunshot wounds. The next day, Ukrainian forces drove the enemy out of their positions and detained Khamgushkeev as one of the few survivors from the enemy unit.

Based on long-term and thorough evidence gathering, Security Service investigators notified the russian citizen of suspicion under Article 438.2 of the CCU (war crimes resulting in death, committed by a group).

The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment.

The investigation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Office of the Prosecutor General.
