SBU systematically counteracts and neutralizes state security threats at state borders
During 2020, due to the SBU activity, more than UAH 2.5 b (USD 88 m) customs payments were added to the state budget. The SBU seized smuggled goods and revealed violations of customs regulations amounting to UAH 510 m (USD 18 m).
In 2020, according to the SBU reports, 53 customs officers, 31 border guards, 10 supervisory officers received suspicion notices. 12 border guard and four customs officers were convicted. 36 people were sentenced for smuggling.
The SBU activity is ongoing to neutralize threats to the state security, including illegal cross-border operations and smuggling. The Service also provides counterintelligence support to customs and border guard authorities.
In particular, SBU officers continue to identify and de-escalate persistent corruption schemes and smuggling at the state and customs borders of Ukraine. The illegal actions threaten country's economic potential and cause critical budget losses.
The SBU also takes measures to detect and prevent attempts by foreign intelligence services, organized criminal groups and individuals to involve Ukrainian customs officers and border guards in the anti-state activities.
Currently, such operations are carried out in Volyn, Zakarpattia, Lviv, Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernivtsi, Chernihiv, Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
To note, SBU officers conduct relevant actions at border and customs checkpoints under Article 25 of the Law of Ukraine on Security Service of Ukraine, Article 7 of the Law of Ukraine on Counterintelligence, and Article 12 of the Law of Ukraine on legal bases of fight against organized crime.
