SSU and Police apprehend suspect ‘hot on the trail’ for attacking law enforcement in Lviv on July 8

Within 24 hours in Lviv, the Security Service and the National Police have identified and detained a man suspected of assaulting a police officer on July 8.

The investigation revealed that the suspect is a 23-year-old resident of Lviv. He was among a group of individuals who initially blocked, damaged and overturned a service vehicle of Ukrainian defenders.

The incident occurred on Chervona Kalyna Avenue in Lviv during mobilisation notification activities conducted by military and police officers.

When the police attempted to stop these criminal acts, members of the crowd began to actively resist the law enforcement.

In particular, one of the suspects attacked a police officer, causing bodily harm.

The decision is pending regarding declaring the detainee suspect under two Articles of the CCU:

  •       345.2 (violence against a law enforcement officer);
  •       296.4 (hooliganism involving firearms, bladed weapons, or other specially prepared objects).

The investigation is underway as part of the criminal proceedings initiated for obstruction of the lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations during a special period (Article 114-1.1 of the CCU).

The law enforcement team is identifying all those involved in the mass disturbances and unlawful acts against Ukrainian Armed Forces servicemen and National Police officers.

A thorough investigation is underway to ensure that all those involved in the attack on Ukrainian defenders are brought to justice. The perpetrators face up to eight years’ imprisonment.

These comprehensive measures are carried out by the SSU Office in the Lviv region jointly with the National Police, under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.

The Security Service of Ukraine emphasises that any attempts to obstruct the lawful activities of the Ukrainian Defence Forces, or any acts of violence against military personnel or law enforcement officers, will be subject to rigorous legal scrutiny. All those involved in such offences will be held accountable in accordance with Ukrainian legislation.
